ASIA — GENERAL TITLE: MAPS OF ASIA URL: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/Libs/PCL/Map_collection/asia.html Maps of Asia from the well-known Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection of the University of Texas at Austin. Includes political and shaded relief maps from most Asian countries, with twenty-six maps of the regions of China. Most maps date from the 1990s, but there are some historical maps as well. TITLE: NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC “MAP MACHINE” URL:http://www.nationalgeographic.com/resources/ngo/maps/atlas/asia/asia.html Maps of the countries of Asia from the National Geographic Society’s Cartographic Division. Nothing more need be said. TITLE: ASK ASIA MAP & TIMELINE LIBRARY URL: http://www.askasia.org/image/maps/maps.htm An excellent series of maps of Asia and of individual Asian countries from the Asia Society. A notable feature is the clear detail in the labels of each map; unlike other maps, little is lost if they are printed. TITLE: LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COUNTRY STUDIES URL: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/cshome.html These are handbooks of 150 to 200 pages in length covering many topics, including those that pertain specifically to the nations’ geography: the physical setting, the population density, the environment. CHINA TITLE: CHINA: MAPS URL: http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~felsing/cstuff/cmaps.html A large collection of maps of China, grouped by content: General, City, Historical, etc. There are maps of Beijing, maps of Chinese flora, and maps of Ming China, to name just a few. TITLE: ENVIRONMENT, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY URL: http://www.redfish.com/USEmbassyChina/sandt/sandt.htm A collection of reports from the U.S. Embassy, Beijing, on a broad range of environmental topics: the use of Landsat images, the loss of farmland, population policy, energy resources, infrastructure. INDIA — TITLE: AT&T INDIA HORIZONS URL: http://www.att.com./indiahorizons/ A page for elementary level students who would like to take a virtual tour of Jaipur, Delhi, and Madras. There are also links to the sites of Indian states (not all of which are in working order) that give a general picture of the geography of each. INDONESIA — TITLE: INDONESIA — A COUNTRY STUDY URL: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/idtoc.html One of the handbooks from the Library of Congress series, referred to above in the Asia - General section. Of special interest is the segment in Chapter 2: Sources of Identification, which deals with the multi-ethnicity of Indonesia: the Javanese, the Balinese, the peoples of Sumatra, and the many ethnic minorities. JAPAN TITLE: JAPAN GIS/MAPPING SCIENCES RESOURCE GUIDE URL: http://www.cast.uark.edu/jpgis For the serious geographer, a guide to Japanese GIS (Geographic Information Systems) with digital data, satellite images, and maps of varying scales from several governmental agencies including Japan’s Geographical Survey Institute. TITLE: KIDS WEB JAPAN URL: http://jin.jcic.or.jp/kidsweb/index.jp.html As the title indicates, this is a site for youngsters and has several pages dedicated to the geography of Japan: a clickable map leads to basic information about the regions of Japan. A short section about the nature and climate is followed by questions posed by children about the seasons and the land. Among the other sub-sections are: Traditions, Schools, Daily Life. NEPAL — TITLE: NEPAL — A COUNTRY STUDY URL: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/nptoc.html Another in the series of Library of Congress handbooks. Geography topics include the three major land regions, population structure and settlement patterns, and the river system of Nepal. SOUTH KOREA — TITLE: SOUTH KOREA: GEOGRAPHY, MAPS AND INFORMATION URL:http://geography.miningco.com/library/maps/blsouthkorea.htm The title says it all: Geography, Maps and Information. Geography information is provided by the CIA Factbook and the National Geographic Society. There are maps from three sources including an overview map from the National Geographic Society. VIETNAM — TITLE: THE VIETNAM PICTURES ARCHIVE URL: http://sunsite.unc.edu/vietnam/vnpic.html This site goes beyond geography, containing pages about the art, poetry, and other interesting aspects of life in Vietnam. (Clicking on the “Midi” link will provide almost an hour of musical pleasure.) The focus of the site is the extensive collection of photographs of the scenery, daily life, and the culture of Vietnam. There are also film clips, audio links, and live radio; however, the visual images are the major attraction of this comprehensive site.
